Special Immigrant Juvenile Status SIJS
What it is:
SIJS stands for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. It is an immigration option for certain immigrant children under 21 who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents.
Benefits:
- A pathway to apply for a green card (lawful permanent residence).
- In some cases Deportation protection while the application is pending.
- A better future
Who can qualify:
To be eligible, a child must:
- Be under 21 at the time of filing (and unmarried).
- Be declared dependent on a juvenile court in the U.S., or placed in the custody of a state agency, guardian, or other individual
- Have a court order stating:
- The child cannot reunify with one or both parents due to abuse, neglect, abandonment, or a similar basis under state law
- It is not in the child’s best interest to return to their country of origin
